Malaysia is a marine country located partly on a peninsula and partly on on the island of Borneo, lying between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean at latitude 1º- 7º North and longitude 97º- 120º East. It is located in the core area of Southeast Asia and is separated by the South China Sea into two similarly sized regions, Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. Peninsular Malaysia, also known as West Malaysia, shares a land and maritime border with Thailand in the north, the Strait of Malacca to the west, the South China Sea to the east. East Malaysia consists of Sarawak and the Malaysian states of Sabah, located on the island of Borneo and shares boarders with Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei. Malaysia is a federation comprising 13 states and three federal territories. The 13 states include: Terengganu Darul Iman, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Sarawak, Sabah, Perlis Indera Kayangan, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Penang, Pahang Darul Makmur, Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus, Malacca, Kelantan Darul Naim, Kedah Darul Aman and Johor Darul Ta'zim. The 3 federal territories are Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

Malaysia is one of the founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The capital is Kuala Lumpur. The total population is 27.17 million (according to the Malaysia Bureau of Statistics as of June 30, 2007), among which, 68.7% are Malaysian-Malays, 23.2% are Malaysian-Chinese, 6.9% are Malaysian-Indians, and 1.2% are other races. Malay is the official language, and English as well as Chinese are also widely used. Malaysia is predominantly an Islamic country. The country covers an area of 329,758 square kilometers, including more than 130,000 square kilometers of West Malaysia and 190,000 square kilometers of East Malaysia.

Malaysia, lying close to the Equator, has a tropical rain forest marine climate, featured with high temperature, high humidity and a lot of rains all the year round. It is a place of "forever summer" and "forever sunshine". The average temperature annual is between 26 ℃ to 32 ℃, 22 ℃ to 28 ℃ in mountainous areas, 25 ℃ to 30 ℃ in coastal plains.

The annual temperature difference is small, while the daily temperature difference is large. The temperature is high during daytime, and the weather is cool at night. Sudden downpour occurs every afternoon, as the saying goes that“summer is the only season in Malaysia, but a rain can cools down as if autumn falls”. There are many small rivers in the country, but there are few great rivers. The Rajang River in Sarawak on the island of Borneo is Malaysia’s longest river at 4,675 km with Winding coastlines. The Strait of Malacca, a long and narrow channel, links the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. There are 1,007 islands in Malaysia, most of which are small.The larger islands are Langkawi island, Tioman island, Redang island and Bangka island.
